LocalBitcoins New EDD Verification Issues

3 days ago I received such an email form localbotcoins that I need: Additional verification required in your country

So I went to LBC and checked if I have to post anything else. There were no left verification needed as I already have Tier 2 Level (Almost max) I decided that its ok and I dont need to verify anything else. I wrote to support ticket asking about it and they told me that I need to go to next level verification but its even impossible to go through until u have 100k USD volume per year.

But yesterday they blocked my coins (0.047 ~500 USD) and ask me to upload some data. I uploaded but 30 hours still not verify anything. I wrote to support tand they tell:

BITBOX — We've got some trouble | 503 - Webservice currently unavailable

We've got some trouble with our backend upstream cluster. Our service team has been dispatched to bring it back online.
I'll start by saying that is an amazing resource (arguably the best out there) for ANY developer getting started with Bitcoin Cash.
When I re-entered the community in January, I got up and running VERY quickly by just taking my time and going through all the well put together docs. Many, MANY thanks to those that worked so hard to make that happen.
Now it's months later, I'm literally looking to go into PRODUCTION with a few services, namely NitoJS and Causes Cash, but I find myself replacing ALL BITBOX code to minimize its impact when the service becomes unavailable (far too often).
This latest outage has lasted approximately 8 hours (based on my running logs).
This reminds me of my early days in Bitcoin Legacy when would go down almost every weekend, and ALL BTC services would halt until mon morning, because basically EVERYONE was using their API.
In my particular case, this is NOT terrible, as I've already spoken with u/trout-bch about using BCH JS on; and I've recently connected with u/blockparty_sh to get started with BitDB on
My issue, and the reason for this post, is because I think it's a bit disingenuous for to centralize (by being the loudest voice) so much of BCH's development WITHOUT offering a PAID tier. I literally asked this question (via email) in my FIRST WEEK, but never got a direct response from their team.
I cannot be the only developer that this is affecting; and this would be a major turnoff for someone new to the community to have to re-write so much code after realizing this library CANNOT be used in production. Btw, is there currently a "public" drop-in replacement for BITBOX?? I know that `restURL` parameter exists for a reason.
If the BCH community is serious about growth and ADOPTION, then I don't see anything better than attracting the BEST developers in the space to BUIDL the BEST services in crypto .. That's how you create VALUE!! .. I'm NOT talking about infrastructure, I'm talking about SERVICES (eg.,,, etc) .. imo, you ARE NOT going to achieve that without a robust, production-ready infrastructure (whether paid or free)..
500 txs/block won't do anybody ANY good, if users are unable to access the network.
edit: as of ~3am est, their api is back online 😁 however, confidence is totally shot, may not launch this week 😣

Hello ! Thank You for your reply. We have learned all paragraphs that You have presented. We have been very surprised your ingenuity. You have made excellent work for such a short period of time. We are interested in the following options from all You have offered: We wil buy bitcoins directly from individuals. (It is how we can buy Bitcoins with no limit). We will buy bitcoins for 25-30% more expensively than it's a real course. We will involve the American sellers of bitcoins for full-time employment. (they are more active and they have more opportunities to buy bitcoins for us.) We will pay a cash for Bitcoins and after receiving of bitcoins. (This is becaus of the fact that there are a lot of scam in USA and there is a probability that anybody can send us the stolen bitcoins. We are ready to pay bitcoins with a cash for the same reason excepting bank transactions) We are going to make deals with new sellers of bitcoins with the limit of $1500 per one deal. After a first month of partnership and if we had no problems with a new seller we may discuss to lift the limitation. Please learn the list of our decision and develop the program for search and involve the American individuals. We have tested the method with our current employees and it has a success. What do you do? -> We buy and sell various valuable as well as antique things in foreign auctions such as eBay. 3. What should a representative do? -> Accept the payment for the goods on Paypal. 4. Why cannot I send the payment directly to you? -> In Swiss Paypal has the limit for "reception of the money" is $ 350 a month. We’ll never ever have such prices for the goods. 5. How much will I earn if I take for you the payments for your sales? -> 5% of each sale - instantly. + $ 1200 - at the end of each month. 6. How much time will the work take? -> 15-60 minutes a day. 7. Do I run any risk? -> If you will not steal our money, you run no risk. 8. I do not want to give my bank account because I'm afraid. -> Bank account is not necessary. The payments for the goods we receive via Paypal, so we don’t use anything but Paypal. 9. Will the customers call me? Or do I have to meet with someone? -> No. It is not necessary, we will contact you via e-mail or by phone. 10. What have I to do when the money comes to Paypal? -> Nothing. Just let us know and wait until we have confirmed the delivery of the sold goods and the purchaser confirms that the goods suit to him. Then we put you the tracking for delivery on Paypal and then we can take the money. 11. When the money is available on Paypal after the tracking is added, what have I to do next? -> Just send the money to your bank account. And from there you can send the money to us. 12. How much will I earn per month, and how to start? -> You'll earn about $ 3000 - $ 5000 per month, depending on amount of sales. 16. Should I pay anything to start working for you? -> No, you should not.

"I'm Closing My Account! This is MY Money!"

So, I've been trying to think of any story worthy of this subreddit for a while now. So, how about one of the times I caught someone actively committing identity theft?

warning: some lovely profanity
TL;DR at bottom; it's very long.
Little backstory: My call center was a service center for a number of banks in the US. Third Party Vendor. Thankfully, I no longer work there. At the time, I was specifically in the fraud department, so catching people actively commiting fraud happened occasionally. Mostly it was just remedying accounts with fraud transactions and dealing with angry people screaming over their cards getting declined.
This little scammy man called in so many times. I spoke with him twice and caught him stealing a family member's credit card and identity. Here's what went down.
M = Me
LD = My Lead, the star investigator who listened once shown the evidence
FD = The Fraudster, our main dude, probably in his 20s/30s (age is important here)
AW = Accomplice Woman, clueless woman roped into a mess, also in her 20s/30s
First call
M: Thanks you for calling Third Party on behalf of your bank. My name is Shimmer_bee, how can I assist you today?
FD: Uh, yea, I'm trying to buy some gift cards at Publix and my card is getting declined.
M: Ok, I'll be happy to assist, may I have your card number and CVV?
FD: *provides\*
M: And your name and SSN?
FD: *provides\*
M: And your date of birth?
FD: 5/18/1948
M: Alright, thanks for providing that information. Let me place you on hold while I access your account.
I put him on hold and immediately start scorwing this account for anything else out of place. Now, the date of birth on this account is listed as like 5/18/1948. The person I'm talking with is in their 20s, 30s tops; I can tell just by the voice. They're supposed to be in their 70s or 80s [RED FLAG]. There've been 2 new cards issued in the past month after another the previous ones were lost [RED FLAG]. I start going through the charges and they're for places like clubs, liquor shops, fast food places, and big box stores/pharmacies. Now, the big box stores and pharmacies, those transactions are all like $500, $750, $ cards. Those are gift cards. None of this matched the prior spending on the account before the card was lost the first time. Also, grandpa hitting up the clubs? Ha. [BIG. FUCKING. RED. FLAG.]
I check back in with the cardholder and tell him it will be just a few minutes longer, my system was having trouble. He was absolutely chill with that.
I decided to call our escalations line for a second look. I've already seen a note from our investigations team that they've researched the account and that all is fine; the person calling is the cardholder. The investigations team runs a background report and pulls calls on accounts sent to them (or that's what they're supposed to do). Now, I know there's something wrong, because there is CLEARLY some shit going down on this account. He's called in about 7 times this week! [RED FLAG] The escalations line tells me to proceed with unblocking the account and reaffirms the investigations team's decision. I can no longer take any protective action on the account. I'm pissed.
So I go back to the caller and start the process of unblocking the account.
Me: Thanks for holding, I just need to go over some charges with you?
FD: It's fine.
Me: Ok, so three days ago I see a charge for $167.32 at (strip club), is that something you attempted?
FD: I've been letting my grandson use my card, that was something he did.
Me: Ok, and I see two days ago, $700.00 at CVS. Is that something you attempted?
FD: Yes.
Me: And then I see here today, $2,000 at Publix. Is that what you were trying to put through? [$2,000 was the real amount. Are you fucking kidding me? AT PUBLIX?!?!]
FD: Yea, my grandson needs some gift cards, he's here with me.
At this point, I have to remove the hold from his account. I'm fuming, but I do it. I just know that this is not the real cardholder, but I have to abide by what the escalations agent and the investigations team said. He makes the transaction and $2,000 of fraudulently purchased gift cards goes through. End of call.
I leave work that day so frustrated. I just hoped he'd call back and get caught, because this was going to be a BIG LOSS for my company since we actively let the identity theft go on. It was going on like $5,000 dollars at this point.
A week or so passed and I'd kinda forgotten about it at this point. We had other, much funnier calls that week. Poorly executed identity theft calls on accounts where the cardholder has been marked as deceased. The usual. Then it happened; just my luck, my friend calls back in.

Second call
M: Thanks you for calling Third Party on behalf of your bank. My name is Shimmer_bee, how can I assist you today?
FD: Hey, yea, I'm trying to make a purchase and my card's getting declined.
M: Ok, I'll be happy to assist, I just need to verify some information first.
We proceed with the verification and as soon his name and date of birth pop up, I know who this is. I tell him I'll put him on a brief hold while I look over the account.
Holy. Fuck. At this point he's called in about 3 more times after getting declined. Twenty. Thousand. Dollars. In. Fraud. $20,000!!!! I wanted to snap so bad. But again, I had to hold up the decision made by the investigations team previously. Only, when I look at the account, I see another agent has gone "nah, fuck that," and referred the dude to the bank. His account is LOCKED DOWN. The account has been sent back off for reinvestigation. I start feeling cocky, because this guy has finally been caught. So, I go back to him and tell him the good news.
Me: Thanks so much for holding, sorry about that wait time. It looks like at this time the hold that's on your account requires you to visit your local branch for further assistance.
FD: Ok, but this is my grandfather's card, he's letting me use it.
YO, GOT'EM. I knew for a fact this was the same person that called last time, and now we've got him on a recorded line saying he's both the grandfather and the grandson. Bruh. You done. Also, you just verified on someone else's account that you're not listed on, being the grandson and all. Instant shutdown.
Me: Unfortunately sir, your grandfather will need to visit the local branch at his first convenience. There's nothing more we can do at this time. This is a branch hold.
FD: Nah, fuck that. I wanna speak with your supervisor.
Me: :) Just a moment sir, let me get someone on the line.
So, I call the escalations line again with a huge smile on my face. This man has outed himself. I'm putting it in the notes. No more fraud for you, mister. My lead picks up and things only get better from here. (Note, she's in the cube right in front of mine, so I can lean over and point stuff out.)
Me: So, hey, I have a fraudster on the line and now they want to speak with a sup.
LD: How do you know it's a fraudster?
Me: Well...for starters, he's claimed to be both the grandfather and grandson on the two calls I've had him on.
LD: Ok, but did you pull a background report?
Me: No, I didn't. let me do that. Here's the account. Grandpa/grandson's been in the strip clubs.
My lead is still skeptical while I explain a little more about the account and pull up the background report. She's about to tell me just to leave it be and remove the hold (per the investigations team report), when I find the most incriminating evidence and nearly scream with joy.
LD: What?
Me: The cardholder, they're supposed to be a woman! I'm speaking with a man!
LD: \still hesitant at this point** You know the background report isn't reliable if you just pull gender from the sources? That's not enough evidence and it's likely wro-
Me: I GOT THE DRIVERS LICENCE. LD, it's the driver's licence, the cardholder is a woman!
At this point, I'm almost in tears. I've caught this man absolutely red handed. I did my job, even when others didn't do their's properly. If the investigations team would have pulled the background report in detail, they would have seen the gender. This would have been stopped. If you only pull a basic report, the gender can often be inaccurate. That might have been what the investigations team did, so in that case the gender listed was a crapshoot. But I was able to source this straight from the cardholder's driver's licence by pulling up the detailed report. There was no denying it, we had someone pretending to be this poor woman, racking up $20,000 in fraud chargers.
LD: So you've spoken to them before?
Me: Yes.
I go on to explain everything I found. The wild charges, the cards that were sent out after the others were lost, the same person calling, and the investigations team's judgement. Lead (who's now in the investigations department) starts going through the account in more detail. She notices that nothing's been changed on the account, per say, but someone is definitely doing something here. So, she advises me to call the cardholder on the phone number listed in the background report. I do. The same man answers. I tell him again I'm still trying to get my sup on the line, it will just be a few more minutes.
It wasn't. She reviewed the account and pulled calls for nearly an hour. This man waited. For an hour.
Then, she finally found the original call where the card was reported lost. What do you know? The person who called in is a woman. We have solid proof now, and she places the highest security hold we have on the account. No one can remove this hold except for leads and above. I feel vindicated.
THEN, my lead calls the number on the background report. I get put on hold by the fraudster. My lead asks for MRS. Name. He hangs up on her and comes back to me.
By now, my lead has ok-ed me to transfer the call so she can take over. I decide to stay on the line.
Me: Thanks so much for holding sir, sorry about the long hold time. I do have my supervisor on the line by the name of Lead, she'll be assisting you from here. Is there anything else I can assist with before I disconnect?
FD: No.
Me: Alright. Well again, my name is Shimmer_bee, thank you for calling Third Party on behalf of your bank, and we'd like to thank you for being a valued client. \mutes phone**
FD: \huffs** hello?
LD: Yes, hi. My name is Lead and I just need to inform this call is being recorded or monitored for quality assurance purposes.
FD: Yea, yea. I need my card unlocked.
LD: And can I have your name, sir, please?
FD: Mr. Name.
LD: And you previously reported the card lost, twice?
FD: Yea, the first one went to the wrong address.
LD: And what was the last transaction you were trying to do?
FD: The one for (bitcoin funding website).
LD: For $300?
FD: Yes.
LD: Ok, and I see there was another transaction here, (suspicious transaction)?
FD: Yes, that was my grandson.
LD: Oh, I'm sorry, my agent said that YOU were the grandson.
FD: \knows he's caught in the lie now** Uhh..
LD: I'm sorry sir, but I'll need to speak with MRS. Name, is she there?
FD: She can't come to the phone, she's sick. C'mon just unlock the card, all the other agents did it.
LD: I'm sorry sir, I can't speak with anyone but Mrs. Name. I have to speak with her to unlock the card.
There's a bit of shuffling and muffled arguing before a woman comes on the phone.
AW: Yes, this is Mrs. Name speaking.
LD: Hi there, Mrs. Name. My name is Lead and I just need to inform this call is being recorded or monitored for quality assurance purposes.
AW: Ok, can you unlock my card now?
LD: Well ma'am, I do have to verify you before we proceed.
My lead asks the verification questions. The accomplice is obviously being fed the answers. She also sounds like she's in her 20s/30s.
LD: Ok, so the the most recent transaction was for (bitcoin funding website), is that correct?
AW: Uh, yes?
LD: Alright wonderful. Let me place you on a brief hold and then we can see about getting that security hold removed.
AW: Ok.
She gets placed back on hold while my lead resends the account for investigation. She included the calls and all my notes. The account is notated that the hold cannot be removed until we speak with the true cardholder.
LD: Ok, thanks so much for holding. Unfortunately, it looks like you will have to go to a branch to have this hold removed.
AW: Oh, ok.
There's more shuffling before the fraudster comes back on the phone.
FD: I thought you were going to remove the hold?!?!
LD: Sir, at this time I can only speak with MRS. Name.
FD: Fuck that. FUCK THIS BANK. Unlock the card!
LD: Sir, if you continue to use that language, I will need to disconnect from the call. At this time, Mrs. Name will need to go to her local branch with two forms of ID and a utility bill to have them faxed in for review before we are able to remove the hold.
LD: Again, sir. If you continue to use that lang-
LD: Sir, I've warned you about the language. At this time I will need to disconnect the call. Once again, thank you for calling Third Party on behalf of your bank, and we'd like to thank you for being a valued client.
She hung up while he was still screaming.
From what I heard, the old woman did eventually visit her branch and we were able to inform her of someone in her house/family stealing her identity. Her card was shut down. I hope she filed charges. From what I've been told, if it's someone you know and/or family who runs up your credit card fraudulently, you have to press charges for the dispute to be processed. In the end, there were over $20,000 in fraudulent charges. I got a lovely $20 extra on my next check and was soon put on the escations line myself. Not my worst call, but definitely a memorable one.
TL;DR: Man steals identity of ambiguously named grandmother, runs up $5,000 in fraudulent charges. Inaccurate information prevents me from putting a stop to his madness on his first call with me. Second call results in him being confronted about the true cardholder being a woman. Man puts accomplice on phone. Account is still locked down and cardholder is requested to visit the branch. Screaming ensures. The account gets shut down after nearly $20,000 of fraudulent transactions occurred. I get sweet vindication knowing I was right all along.
Edit: Changed some wording.
Edit 2: Thank you so much for the gold!

The International 2018 in Vancouver FAQ (Updated!)

Hey there again, you punks.
So with a tip coming from some of the moderators on the board, I've decided just to quickly update this FAQ that I wrote a few months back since TI is next week and I'm sure many of you still have a ton of questions. I've gotten some more information that I can pass down to you in regards to Vancouver but also now TI as well, including updated marijuana laws and beer recommendations.
Two quick notes:

This summer has been an extremely hot season in Vancouver (at least in Vancouverite standards). Like anyone who attended in Seattle last year, there is noticeable smoke in the air in the city due to the fires all over the Pacific North West. If you have breathing issues or health related problems do to particles in the air, be advised that there is currently an Air Quality Advisory in effect so act accordingly. Wind/Rain will most likely clear up any issues going into next week, but just a heads up in case new fires flare up or we aren't blessed with some light rain. Forecast is looking to be sunny through midweek and the finals, with an average of about 23-25C.

A staple for Vancouver residents since 1910, the PNE will be open from August 18th-September 3rd (closed on August 20th & 27th). If you're looking to do something after a midweek day, the PNE is the perfect place to go checkout for a fun night out filled with events, concerts, beer gardens, crazy carny food, rides, maybe BSJ, shopping and a lot more. This article will tell you everything you need to know about the PNE, how to get there and what's going on.

Yes, but it's not exactly regulated by AirBnB. Feel free to stay at one through AirBnB but know that it might be a little tricky to deal with issues if they come up with your rental. Also while you're at it, check out VRBO.
The general piece of advice you'll get from any local about where to stay for TI is going to be anywhere that's on the Skytrain Expo Line (the line in dark blue). The Expo Line will take you to Stadium-Chinatown station, which is where Rogers Arena is 30 seconds away. As in Seattle, the closer to downtown you are, the more expensive it is to stay.
Unlike Seattle Center, there aren't very many budget hotels left, if at all in the Downtown core. The cheaper hostels are available, though fair warning, many of them are placed on Granville Street, which is a place that many Vancouverites will tell you to avoid while you're here (Though I have never stayed at a hostel on Granville, if anyone has an experience, feel free to share). Check out the Ramada Inn and the Days Inn near Waterfront for some cheaper-ish options.
In my mind, there are two places that I would keep a look-out for avoiding while you visit Vancity.
  1. Granville Street. During the day time it's normally fine, filled with some cool shops (Golden Age Collectibles, The Rock Shop, Movieland Arcade) but it's packed to the absolute max with dumbasses at night due to the amount of night clubs. There's police around every weeknight, but since you're in Vancouver for a good time, head towards Gastown, Chinatown or Main Street for places to party.
  2. Downtown East Side. If you've researched anything about Vancouver, you'll know that this area as where a large portion of the cities homeless reside. There is rampant drug use, poverty and sex work in this neighborhood, focused mainly between 5-10 blocks in the area of Main/Hastings. That being said, the community is an especially strong one, with fantastic human beings supporting the less fortunate. Though there isn't too much danger in terms of being robbed, you might want to just avoid the area at night. Be respectful to the people of this community and you'll have no problems.

Sadly, no there isn't. We know, it absolutely sucks and everyone in Vancouver is aware. Your options are public transit or a taxi.
Super shitty if you don't like paying for parking. If you can, park outside of the Downtown core near a Skytrain and then head over to the Arena. Commercial Drive is pretty good for this if you can find certain spots. Tinseltown as well if you buy a movie ticket on non-event days.
If you've ever been to any major city, you'll notice that Vancouver shares the same load-up card/tap system that places like London share. It's called Compass Card and it's fairly easy to use. Just load up money onto the card, tap it when you enter and tap when you leave. It'll do all the calculations for you. Note that certain zones will cost more just due to how far you're traveling.
Yes it does! Car2Go and Evo are two of Vancouver's most popular car share services. Hot tip would be to register before you head over to Vancouver and it'll help mitigate the fact that UbeLyft aren't in Vancouver just yet. Just drive safely.
The easiest way to get to downtown from YVR, if you aren't getting picked up/taking a taxi is to take the Canada Line. It will take you directly to Waterfront station, from there you can take multiple buses, the Expo Line (the main line that will take you to Rogers Arena) or the Seabus (going to North VancouveLonsdale).

19 years old.
Vancouver has an exploding craft beer culture and you'll be happy to find that the variety of different beers/ciders to drink is absolutely massive, probably to the point of being intimidating.
Here are some of my favorite breweries and the beers that you should look out for when you're at the liquor store/pub:
Twin Sails Brewing
Dat Juice Pale Ale
Two Straws MilkShake IPA
Short Pants Mosaic IPA
Brassneck Brewing
Changeling Sour
Passive Aggressive IPA
Bjorn Again Farmhouse Ale
Steel & Oak
Changeling Sour
Passive Agressive IPA
Bjorn Again Farmhouse Ale
Bomber Brewing
Bomber Parklife Passionfruit Ale
Bomber Pilsner
Bomber Snow White IPA
Yes. First, there isn't any drinking in public if you already didn't know. Second, you must have TWO pieces of ID on you whenever you go to buy drinks in case you're asked for your ID. First piece must be photo ID, the second piece must be something with your name on it (in order for bartenders/servers to validate the first piece). I see a lot of tourists thrown off by this, so just know that Vancouver's liquor laws are much more strict than other places.
I've heard from a few Vancouver residents that this isn't exactly enforced harshly, but just to note that it is an actual law. Piece of mind.
%.05. There will be a ton of pubcrawls and side events going on for people that are attending TI and I'm sure that you'll be blasted one night or another. Please don't drink and drive. If you need a cab, here are the numbers you can contact in order to grab a taxi from downtown.
Yellow Cab: (604) 681-1111
Black Top Cab: (604) 731-1111
MacLure's Cabs: (604) 831-1111
Also, a note for people from outside of Vancouver: the cab drivers in this city are notorious for being hard to deal with at times. Broken debit machines, cash up front, not providing receipts. Use your common sense to get you through pushy cabbies. If they have a broken debit machine and they are still driving, kindly reject them and give your business to another cabbie that will. UbeLyft will be here soon and karma will bite them back.
If at anytime you are in an emergency and don't know what to do, please DM me and I will provide my contact info.

Vancouver is a glutenous paradise of places to eat. Instead of giving you specific places to go eat, here are some links that you might find helpful in terms of recommendations:
Meowjin's Guide to TI8
The 38 Essential Vancouver Restaurants
It's To Die For List
This is not confirmed at the moment, but if the rules were anything like Seattle, you will be able to bring outside food into the arena. You are not permitted to bring liquids into the venue. You'll have to dump out your water bottle and refill it once inside. Rogers Arena might have different policies, but thankfully the venue has twice the amount of food stalls including a much more varied selection.
Everyone from Vancouver attending will hate me, but this is going to be one of the hottest tips I can give you: there is a Costco food court DIRECTLY across the street on the lower level of Rogers Arena that DOES NOT require a membership in order to buy food. It is the only Costco food court in Canada that doesn't need a membership to eat there. Hot dogs, poutine, pizza, soft drinks, ice cream and it's all lovingly Costco cheap. Enjoy!

Visa/Mastercard are widely accepted everywhere. Cards such as American Express/Discover are also accepted most places, though a few places might reject them for whatever reason (higher charge rates, issues with their machines etc..) Best case would be to make sure you have a Visa/Mastercard with you at all times as a back-up in case you run into any issues. Most places in Vancouver also allow you to use Android/Apple Pay now as well. No bitcoin though.
Well, that's entirely up to you. If you're staying the full week, a few hundred dollars in spare Canadian currency won't hurt you, especially if majority of your spending is going to be on plastic. There's going to be the Secret Shop, but that'll be done through online ordering and not cash payments. Just don't come with nothing. Worst case, always have at least $30-$40 cash on you just in case you run into a bind. It's really entirely up to you and how you plan on spending your time here. Do note that because of the low Canadian dollar, don't be surprised if the price of certain things is higher than usual.
By far it would be the Vancouver Bullion & Currency Exchange due to their lower exchange rates. Banks will more than likely charge you higher rates than the VBCE.

Due to the amount of fires that have started in the Pacific North West the past month or so, please do not throw your cigarette/joint butts into the street, sidewalk, bushes or wherever that isn't a proper garbage. You'll get a ton of dirty looks by locals if you do otherwise.
Canadians are known to be rather polite, we'll answer questions for you or guide you in the right direction (as long as we aren't in a huge rush). As long as you're respectful of the people around you, take care of your hygiene, don't spit on the ground, talk over people in conversation or just avoiding being a total dick, you'll be fine. Though Vancouver is a somewhat socially cold city, that's mainly in dating circles. Get some new Bumble photos up!
Most places won't have the tip included in your bill. It's common courtesy to tip between %10-%15 of your final bill if you enjoyed your meal/drink/service. Feel free to go higher if you had a really excellent time. Some places do include the tip in the bill, but will have it noted usually at the bottom of the menu.
A few. Remove your backpack when you're boarding a bus/SkyTrain in order to create more space for the people around you. Hygiene again is a big one. Remember to fill your Compass card and check your remaining balance at least once a day in case you're transiting a lot. If you see elderly/disabled/parents with strollers attempt to come on board, the polite thing to do would be to offer your seat etc..
Don't worry at all! Vancouver is an extremely multicultural city and the residents here are used to hearing many different languages daily. Best bet is if you struggle communicating with anyone for any reason, download the Google Translate app and use it to answer questions you might have in a discussion.
Use common sense. Most players/talent would be more than willing to sign an autograph or pose for a photo with you. But also be aware that much of the on-screen talent (Slacks, Kaci, panel members) will often have to be running from segment to segment, taking in matches and so on. If they seem to have a minute, ask nicely, thank them for their time and cross one off of the bucket list.
Don't throw things at Slacks.

No update on this. Rogers Arena is mainly a concrete concourse, surrounded by a viaduct and multiple lower roads. Unlike Seattle Center (which had multiple fields and smaller available venues), the only place large enough outside the Arena that could hold a large crowd with a big screen would most likely be the "main" entrance through Expo Blvd/Pat Quinn Way. There are a few other options in the area, but we're going to have to wait to see how creative Valve is with the space around the Arena. Perhaps they rent out the adjacent parking lots?
No update on this also, but again, there's a lack of outdoor space beyond the concrete concourse. Sportsbar Live will be open, which also gives a view of inside the Arena while you're eating/drinking. But again, it's indoors.
From what I remember from Canucks games, yes, there are stations where you can plug your phone in to charge. But don't be surprised if a company like NVIDIA pops up a charging station outside much like in Seattle.
One of the more obvious differences that most people will find from Key Arena to Rogers Arena, is that unlike Key Arena, Rogers doesn't have an open space concept between levels. Meaning, you won't be able to just look up to the third floor and see players hanging out like you normally would. This year, they most likely will be held in the boxes above or in the dressing rooms in the lower levels. Look for autograph times scheduled throughout the week to see your favorite players.
The only thing right now is a Vancouver Whitecaps (MLS) game on August 18th and a BC Lions (CFL) on the 25th. So if you really feel inclined, now you know.

When: On October 17th, weed will officially be legalized in British Columbia and most parts of Canada.
How: Normally you need a medicinal prescription to purchase marijuana legally. Though, because of the soon to be legalization coming up in a few months, most dispensaries will most likely write you a prescription if you tell them a valid medical reason for the marijuana (Trouble sleeping, chronic joint pain, back pain, headaches, trouble eating etc.). My friends who smoke themselves told me that hot tip, so do with it what you will. Please DO NOT buy weed from a source that isn't verified by another trusted person or a licensed dispensary. You never know what your weed could be laced with.
Where: Here are some dispensaries located close to Rogers Arena.
Bloom Medical Dispensary
The Dub Dispensary
The Medical Cannibis Dispensary
You can't smoke anywhere that frequents children, even if there aren't kids around. So no beaches, public parks, playgrounds etc..
So just, anywhere that's away from people that don't want to partake essentially.

If you weren't able to buy tickets from Ticket Master, you have a few options.
Post in the TI8 Vancouver Subreddit and ask if anyone has a spare ticket.
Buying tickets from scalpers in front of Rogers Arena is fairly easy and shouldn't be difficult if you understand the basics of haggling.
  1. Know what you're comfortable paying and stick to it. Always remember that number.
  2. Be prepared to just walk away. The longer you stay negotiating, the more you show the scalper how important it is for you to buy the tickets. Play the long game.
  3. The less you talk, the less information you give the scalper. If he says he's got a Midweek ticket for $300, shrug and say no thanks.
  4. Have money in your hand/wallet when you're trying to buy tickets. When they see that the cash is right there, they'll be more inclined to just make the deal and move onto the next one.
You will most likely miss the opening ceremonies, but after that the prices for Midweek tickets will normalize and scalpers will want to just get rid of their tickets at a lesser price.
The advantage you have in this instance is that Vancouver, outside of the LoL tournament at Pacific Colosseum, doesn't have much experience with esports tournaments. So scalpers themselves won't have the same level of patience. The longer you wait to buy your tickets from them, the cheaper you can get them for. Only downside is that you'll be missing games.
The other thing you can do is literally just walk around the outside of the Arena and spot non-scalpers with extra tickets. There are always people who buy extra tickets and are just wanting to get their money back (friends flake on them, they couldn't flip them like they thought).
DO NOT panic and end up buying an overpriced ticket from StubHub, Craigslist or wherever. Tickets will be available, you just have to keep your cool.
The box office at Rogers Arena is located at the bottom of the venue on Expo/Pat Quinn Way at the Toyota Ticket Center. You can pick up your tickets between these times:
Mon, August 20th: 7AM - 9PM
Tue, August 21th: 8AM - 9PM
Wed, August 22nd: 8AM - 9PM
Thu, August 23rd: 8AM - 9PM
Fri, August 24th: 8AM - 9PM
Not sure about the box office times for the Finals. Will update that when I know.

So first off, understand that EVERYONE there is going for the same reason you are, DOTA. Don't be afraid to go up to people, say hello and start conversations. If they shrug you off, fuck them, they don't deserve your brilliance. Enjoy yourself. Worst case, just create a thread on DOTA saying that you want to go shotgun a few beers. My first TI was pretty much by myself, but the combination of a beer + a garden really did wonders.
Simply put, don't worry as much as your mind is telling you to worry. All the talent (casters/players) are incredibly friendly and are pretty much the same as us, just super stoked to be there. But do give them space if they're working or running around to the next thing.
During TI, after every First Blood in a match, there are potential drops given to in arena attendee's who have registered their badge with their Steam ID. There will be a Steam Link kiosk/section OUTSIDE of Rogers Arena, so look out for it. You must have tapped into the Arena in order to be eligible for those drops.
The link to register your badge to be eligible for these drops will be on the back of your badge when you receive it.
Try to pack as lightly and efficiently as possible. My two main staples during the last two TI's were a water bottle (usually given out in a goody bag for midweek + finals ticket holders) and a portable battery pack for my phone. Also know that you might buy things from the Secret Shop, do some shopping downtown and the last thing you want to do is carry that stuff around with you all day. Though consider bringing a sweater for inside the Arena, as Rogers is a fairly cold one.
Try checking with bell boys/concierge at any hotels if they can possibly check in some of your bags for you. I tried this at TI7 and was surprised how chill they were. I left them a $5 tip for taking my bags and was free for the rest of the day.
Avoid the Secret Shop on the first day or else you'll just spend the entire day waiting in line. Midweek the shop lines will be much more reasonable.

Well formatted thread to get you started.
Also a well-detailed Google Map of venues/places that should interest people attending TI for places all across Vancouver

There are obviously some things that no one knows right now in regards to potential additions or subtractions from moving the event from Key Arena to Rogers. But I'll try my best to keep this thing updated if people bookmark it for future use.
Enjoy planning your trip to TI!

Progress Report #0: The Mod So Far

Hello everyone. If you don't know already, I'm LuxLoser, lead developer for Hearts of Durasteel, a Star Wars mod for Hearts of Iron IV. This first progress report is to convey the general state of the mod and basic information. I will also be adding posts for the available leaks/declassified documents from the Discord, and the next progress report will come once the map is fully created, at least visually.
The map of Durasteel is a major component, as this isn't just an alternate history mod. Instead, it takes the map of Earth as we know it chucks it out, instead giving you a full map of the Star Wars Galaxy. "But how?" you might ask.
Well, the first thing we have done is create planets. They will be flat, 2-D items, representative of the planet as a whole. Think of it as a top-down view of a flattened globe, and the march of troops around the planet represents control of a certain region, of the southern hemisphere, of the large sea, of the mines, etc. The small provinces within the planets mean that planets aren't just one time battles but at times lengthy campaigns. Events during battles will also help make up for the limitations we have in depicting interstellar ground warfare. Planets that have no importance or are inhospitable and not valuable won't be depicted. Instead it is 'major' world displayed, not a star system. Various moons and satellites, however, are displayed near the planet, and important systems within the same system are placed close to one another.
Here is a look at the map layout, though it is, of course, constantly being updated. And here is an example of a planet and moon.
When we first started testing this idea in practice, the map looked like this. From there we did more refinement and ended up with this. You'll notice it very much looks like a bunch of islands in a very open sea. Technically, that's what it will always be, but we want to simulate the idea of a simplified map of space. We are still refining it, but the biggest things we tackled were: 1. the reflection of clouds, 2. waves and sea texture, 3. a space background. The reflection issue was easy enough, and we were able to figure out how to put in a background (admittedly still darkened and desaturated) not long after. But the issue of waves persisted. However, not long ago, we hit a break through and were able to remove the waves.
Here is the physical map as it exists presently. Here is a look at Coruscant and its moons and 'orbit tile'. And finally, here is a close up of Alderaan and a look at the stand-in "planetary ocean", which is blue mountains. We're still looking into improving the look.
We still have on the map agenda: 1. The sun. There is a light glare on the 'ocean' we are looking into disabling. 2. Improving the color of the background 3. Creating a proper, detailed space background with fairly accurate stars and easy to see hyperlanes 4. Improving planetary ocean look 5. Improving the height map to remove the rough look of the 'islands'
A lot less to cover here as I just want to clarify a few things. Firstly, we are not going for a plan of “every planet a tag.” Instead, while we do have plans for a number of tags, the approach is to have at game start, a large nation in the form of the Galactic Republic. The Republic will not be entirely united, with regions moving away from the Republic shown as separate puppets. This is a sort of narrative tool, as it shows that while some regions within the Republic have their own agendas, they believe in the Republic and respect its government. Near the Republic will be the CIS, focused on Serenno led by Dooku, at this point a growing movement that rejects the Republic government. The corporate states that he is enticing will be shown as moving away until the Battle of Geonosis comes and lines are drawn in the sand. The CIS will swell and the war will begin. The Neutral Systems will spawn not long after, refusing to accept either side of the conflict as their sovereign. Alongside all of this will be the Hutts and the Chiss. The former will be a large but fractured group, each of the leader of the Cartel having their own demesne. And the Chiss will be sitting in isolation, content on tackling their own issues. So, at the start there will be only a few nations available.
Why? Well the reason this mod is being made with Hearts of Iron IV is the unique way in which the event chains and the focus trees can be used to tell a story for a nation. Our objective is in taking Star Wars and allowing the player to craft their story. Fewer tags, more paths, more branches to the stories. Some of those stories will include switching to a different tag of a new nation, others will not. That the story is logical, sensible, and that the ways it affects the galaxy are cohesive is what will be important. Because Star Wars isn’t just some science fiction setting. It’s a Space Opera, a dramatic saga of heroes and villains, of the rise and fall of nations, of legends and myths, of prophecy and legacy. While we want to give the player choice, we have to be careful not to give total freedom. The massive conspiracies, intertwining stories, the presence of the Force, and the overarching themes of Star Wars mean that you can’t just be a rogue agent. There will be consequences, events that transpire because of things beyond your control. I want each playthrough to feel like it has a narrative, a story told in an unconventional medium. When you click “Senator Amidala dies!” I want it to be a little more than just an event that changes your focus tree and gives you some political power loss. I want the events that unfold, the war that ensues, the future that is written to feel like it was destined, not just random occurrences bumping into each other. That was a bit of an avant-garde rant there, but hopefully you’ll know what I mean as things progress.
But the question you might still have on tags is, “Well what about later on?” And that is more than fair. Ultimately there will be a number of tags, but mostly regional, with a few planets collected together around regional leaders. Forming each will take specific circumstances. So why not every world a tag? Well it also helps to demonstrate my personal view on how an interstellar nation functions on a greater scale. Namely, some systems are effectively “swept under the rug”. Due to the distance from major trade routes, economic capacity, population disparity, and military size, the neighbors of larger worlds are going to rally behind regional leaders, due in part to being just unable to stand alone. Worlds like Alderaan and Corellia, while having separate representatives than their neighboring systems, would have such sway and hegemony that the only reason their neighbors wouldn’t vote with them as a block is personal politics, and even that is more like one region being more liberal than another within one state and so electing a different party to the shared delegation than the others. But if the Republic were to just be dissolved, Alderaan’s neighbors, despite political differences, would be forced to work together, and work with Alderaan, to survive. This is partly due to the needs of a population accustomed to an economy where resources are practically infinite due to the shared resources of so many worlds in the galaxy. Unless a planet wanted to become an austere hermit kingdom, they have to work with more powerful neighbors. The materials used for infrastructure, the energy sources, the technological grids, the economic sectors, everything on a planet would be accustomed to what was available on the galactic market as a whole. Doonitum is common is some areas, but may be utterly unavailable on a planet. However, their security fleet is still made with doontium hulls, despite the metal not existing on their worlds. So unless they want their planet invaded and crushed, they need a doontium trade to survive.
The other component leading to regional leadership is how space travel works in Star Wars. Hyperspace Routes, planned paths of transit, and the perils of ‘rough space’ via nebulas and asteroid belts and so on, means it’s almost like Earth before air travel. If you’re far from a main route, ships will need to go through perilous, uncharted regions. Even before making that journey, if you’re an isolated world far from any routes, ships are first going to jump to the nearest planet close to a safe Hyperspace route. Imagine you’re a town near Florence in 13th Century Italy. Traders go to Florence on the main road before trying to reach you, and if it’s too much risk, you’re better off sending your own traders into Florence before they return. Say you’re on a minor road, one that branches off of the southern road to Florence. You want goods from north of Florence? Then you’re reliant on Florentine traders bringing it. And when war comes? You’ll need the Florentine army to hold off invaders. And so, despite disliking Florence, having your own culture, traditions, and political views, your town is under the jurisdiction of the Florentine city-state. Replace Florence with Corellia and Corellian and you see that due to the nature of hyper-space transit and the constrictions of moving through space itself, history has almost become cyclical for these minor worlds. Not to mention that as this situation persists, Corellian culture, ideals, and people would seep in, until what you have most in common with other minor world near Corellia is just Corellian you all are!
On a less philosophical or artistic note, let’s be honest. You really want to try to manage a game where you’re the faction leader of 50 minor nations, all with their own AIs? It would be a nightmare, especially when the war starts and each AI tries to command its own troops. And a major city on a planet falls? Rather than just lose some war score you can regain as your troops on the moons or nearby work to reclaim it, you instead get “THE WELSH UNION HAS CAPITULATED,” giving your enemies free reign in the territory, a huge hit to score, and the cession of control of worlds despite losing little on them.
This will be getting a separate post soon as well.
Durasteel presently has 11 set ideologies, with a 12th being in discussion in the form of “Grayism”, or “Neutralist”, meaning a state under the control of Gray Jedi. However, this is not yet set. Some of these ideologies, like New Order, the sides of the Force, and to some degree Akaan’adocrat, come from Star Wars canon or from Legends. But Star Wars has always been vague on its politics, leaving to us flexibility and creativity in developing coherent ideologies for gameplay.
Each ideology in the image has a definition but I want to elaborate on that definition here.
Lastly, we have also begun implementing new resources into the mod. None of these are made up, though some lean more into Legends, as that continuity provides more detail in terms of military supplies. These are as follows, and in order on the screen:
Alright well that’s most of what I wanted to address in this report, giving everyone an awareness of where the mod is at in terms of development. Hopefully we can have more regular Progress Reports, but with University, work, and other projects that devs are involved with, we’re trying our best to move as quick as we can. Thank you all for your support.
Vode An!

How To Set Up a Firewall Using FirewallD on CentOS 7

The majority of this definition is actually metadata. You will want to change the short name for the service within the tags. This is a human-readable name for your service. You should also add a description so that you have more information if you ever need to audit the service. The only configuration you need to make that actually affects the functionality of the service will likely be the port definition where you identify the port number and protocol you wish to open. This can be specified multiple times.
For our “example” service, imagine that we need to open up port 7777 for TCP and 8888 for UDP. By entering INSERT mode by pressing i , we can modify the existing data center in moldova definition with something like this:
Example Service This is just an example service. It probably shouldn't be used on a real system.
Press ESC , then enter :x to save and close the file.
Reload your firewall to get access to your new service:
sudo firewall-cmd --reload
You can see that it is now among the list of available services:
firewall-cmd --get-services outputRH-Satellite-6 amanda-client amanda-k5-client bacula bacula-client bitcoin bitcoin-rpc bitcoin-testnet bitcoin-testnet-rpc ceph ceph-mon cfengine condor-collector ctdb dhcp dhcpv6 dhcpv6-client dns docker-registry dropbox-lansync elasticsearch example freeipa-ldap freeipa-ldaps freeipa-replication freeipa-trust ftp ganglia-client ganglia-master high-availability http https imap imaps ipp ipp-client ipsec iscsi-target kadmin kerberos kibana klogin kpasswd kshell ldap ldaps libvirt libvirt-tls managesieve mdns mosh mountd ms-wbt mssql mysql nfs nrpe ntp openvpn ovirt-imageio ovirt-storageconsole ovirt-vmconsole pmcd pmproxy pmwebapi pmwebapis pop3 pop3s postgresql privoxy proxy-dhcp ptp pulseaudio puppetmaster quassel radius rpc-bind rsh rsyncd samba samba-client sane sip sips smtp smtp-submission smtps snmp snmptrap spideroak-lansync squid ssh synergy syslog syslog-tls telnet tftp tftp-client tinc tor-socks transmission-client vdsm vnc-server wbem-https xmpp-bosh xmpp-client xmpp-local xmpp-server
You can now use this service in your zones as you normally would.

Creating Your Own Zones

While the predefined zones will probably be more than enough for most users, it can be helpful to define your own zones that are more descriptive of their function server management in romania.
For instance, you might want to create a zone for your web server, called “publicweb”. However, you might want to have another zone configured for the DNS service you provide on your private network. You might want a zone called “privateDNS” for that.
When adding a zone, you must add it to the permanent firewall configuration. You can then reload to bring the configuration into your running session. For instance, we could create the two zones we discussed above by typing:
sudo firewall-cmd --permanent --new-zone=publicweb
sudo firewall-cmd --permanent --new-zone=privateDNS
You can verify that these are present in your permanent configuration by typing:
sudo firewall-cmd --permanent --get-zones outputblock dmz drop external home internal privateDNS public publicweb trusted work
As stated before, these won’t be available in the current instance of the firewall yet:
firewall-cmd --get-zones outputblock dmz drop external home internal public trusted work
Reload the firewall to bring these new zones into the active configuration:
sudo firewall-cmd --reload
firewall-cmd --get-zones outputblock dmz drop external home internal privateDNS public publicweb trusted work
Now, you can begin assigning the appropriate services and ports to your zones. It’s usually a good idea to adjust the web hosting in moldova active instance and then transfer those changes to the permanent configuration after testing. For instance, for the “publicweb” zone, you might want to add the SSH, HTTP, and HTTPS services:
sudo firewall-cmd --zone=publicweb --add-service=ssh
sudo firewall-cmd --zone=publicweb --add-service=http sudo firewall-cmd --zone=publicweb --add-service=https sudo firewall-cmd --zone=publicweb --list-all outputpublicweb target: default icmp-block-inversion: no interfaces: sources: services: ssh http https ports: protocols: masquerade: no forward-ports: source-ports: icmp-blocks: rich rules:
Likewise, we can add the DNS service to our “privateDNS” zone:
sudo firewall-cmd --zone=privateDNS --add-service=dns
sudo firewall-cmd --zone=privateDNS --list-all outputprivateDNS interfaces: sources: services: dns ports: masquerade: no forward-ports: icmp-blocks: rich rules:
We could then change iaas platform in romania our interfaces over to these new zones to test them out:
sudo firewall-cmd --zone=publicweb --change-interface=eth0
sudo firewall-cmd --zone=privateDNS --change-interface=eth1
At this point, you have the opportunity to test your configuration. If these values work for you, you will want to add the same rules to the permanent configuration. You can do that by re-applying the rules with the --permanent flag:
sudo firewall-cmd --zone=publicweb --permanent --add-service=ssh
sudo firewall-cmd --zone=publicweb --permanent --add-service=http sudo firewall-cmd --zone=publicweb --permanent --add-service=https sudo firewall-cmd --zone=privateDNS --permanent --add-service=dns
After permanently applying these your rules, you can restart your hourly kvm vps in europe network and reload your firewall service:
sudo systemctl restart network
sudo systemctl reload firewalld
Validate that the correct zones were assigned:
firewall-cmd --get-active-zones outputprivateDNS interfaces: eth1 publicweb interfaces: eth0
And validate that the appropriate services are available for both of the zones:
sudo firewall-cmd --zone=publicweb --list-services outputhttp https ssh sudo firewall-cmd --zone=privateDNS --list-services outputdns
You have successfully set up your dedicated server in romania! If you want to make one of these zones the default for other interfaces, remember to configure that behavior with the --set-default-zone= parameter:
sudo firewall-cmd --set-default-zone=publicweb

You should now have a windows remote desktop fairly good understanding of how to administer the firewalld service on your CentOS system for day-to-day use.
The firewalld service allows you to configure reseller kvm vps program maintainable rules and rule-sets that take into consideration your network environment. It allows you to seamlessly transition between different firewall policies through the use of zones and gives administrators the ability to abstract the port management into more friendly service definitions. Acquiring a working knowledge of this system will allow you to take advantage of the kvm virtual server flexibility and power that this tool provides.

dalai llama has been created

Par H. A. Guerber This is one of the Hindu legends. Buddha is one of the principal Hindu gods and teachers. Those who follow his precepts are called Buddhists. Nirvana is the Hindu heaven, for the Buddhists imagine that the virtuous after death pass into a negative state of bilss, while those who have not yet reached the necessary state of perfection undergo various transmigrations of soul.

Need 20 Karma! r/Ethereum

Hey all, I'm looking to post something to Ethereum and it requires 20 karma points. I've always used Reddit for all my reading, but never posted much. Now I need your help!

If I can get 20 karma, I can post the following, which is to raise money for a non-profit:

Serenity Now! Prosperity Later. And Vitalik w/ Laura Shin tonight! (03/20)

C’mon, who doesn’t remember that iconic Seinfeld episode and how is it not ALL you think about when you talk about Ethereum 2.0, aka Serenity (

So I made a shirt and I want you all to buy it.

But I’m not out looking to make a quick ETH. The cryptos you use to purchase these shirts will be donated back to our local community. Last year, our non-profit Long Island Blockchain Council hosted several events educating the community at local universities, co-working hubs, and virtual calls. This year, we know we can bring so much more to our community. Especially if we give them free crypto and teach them how to go out and use it!

We need your help. We're using Coinbase Commerce to accept payment for these shirts, accepting Ethereum, Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, and Litecoin for now. We’ll work towards accepting more coins going forward. The coins you use to buy these shirts are the coins we’ll use to give out to our event attendees. One of our upcoming events is is our First Annual Bitcoin Pizza Day event coming this May where our attendees will be buying slices of pizza from local restaurants for the $1 equivalent of Bitcoin.

Tonight, we’ll be wearing these shirts at Columbia University for the live podcast with Laura Shin and Vitalik Buterin. Hopefully we can get a picture. I’ll keep you posted! Anyone else going tonight, please let me know. I’ll be the guy wearing Vitalik Buterin and Justin Sun’s face on my chest.

Serenity Now. PROSPERITY LATER! - (

JEFFREY GUNDLACH: Well in the fullness of time, I think absolutely we’ll go below that. I’m pretty sure this is a bear market. People like this definition of 20% down as a bear market, but that’s obviously very arbitrary. I’ve been around over 35 years in the business and have seen a number of bear markets. It’s more about how you lead into it, how it develops and how the sentiment changes, and I think we’ve had pretty much all of the variables that characterize a bear market I remember going -- usually something happens that really doesn’t make any sense at all and I’m kind of amazed how it goes on longer than it should like back in the dotcom days when companies were being IPO’d and had no sales let alone revenues that’s hard to be and they would actually explode to the upside on the IPO. That’s kind of crazy and then we had the subprime lending with pick a pay loans back in ’05 and ’06 and that was kind of crazy and that went on longer than it should have. This time like we talked about a year ago it was crypto, bitcoin which was truly a mania, we talked a year ago it just went up. Maybe in the end it’s a good thing or the block chain technology is a good thing. The way it was being treated and believed in was a mania and then it crashed about a week after we met a year ago and it was at 17,500 when we were speaking right in this spot and of course now it’s down below 3,500 so an 85% decline. And one after another you start to see various sectors of the global financial markets give it up. The global stock market peaked January 26th. And so did the New York Stock Exchange composite, January 26 but the Dow Jones Industrials, the Nasdaq, the S&P 500. All of these things, one by one, started to roll over and come the summertime or later in the summertime you were down to the FAANGs and then you were down to two stocks it was amazon and apple and then amazon gave it up. And then finally when they decided they weren’t going to tell you how many phones they sold anymore apple gave it up.
SCOTT WAPNER: That was the last straw.
JEFFREY GUNDLACH: That was kind of the last straw. It was October 3rd when the tariffs -- well, it was that USMC -- whatever it’s called, it’s really NAFTA but it was announced we would have this change in NAFTA that would lead to a requirement that a certain fraction of car parts be made in higher costs locales which basically meant not Mexico. A senior executive at ford motor said, well obviously we’re going to have to raise the prices on our cars if input prices are going up. Suddenly the market seemed to wake up to the fact that this was real and the next day the stock market tipped over in fact, on October 3rd, Jay Powell said we’re a long way from neutral. And that was a big problem, too.
SCOTT WAPNER: That seemed to be the tipping point.
JEFFREY GUNDLACH: Yes that with the USMCA thing and the Ford Motor executive, those things seemed to come together and coalesce into we’ve had enough. And, yeah, the Jay Powell thing was interpreted by the market as a scary thing, the fed was going to keep going a long distance further and then the market dropped over 10% and suddenly the Fed had to massage the rhetoric. And suddenly it was, well, we have a new definition of neutral maybe. We’re actually within the lower bound or close to the lower bound of neutral in an attempt to stabilize the market. So, yeah, it seems like a bear market to me in the way things trade with late day volume being bad and the like the best thing for the near term, I think, is that the most export sensitive stock market, South Korea, the Kospi bottomed October 29 so at least that’s not pushing to new lows and emerging markets broadly are doing better because they’re extremely export driven. Maybe this leg down is getting toward an exhaustion point the sentiment is pretty dark right now. I’d be happier on the short term outlook if the VIX would go above 40 which is usually a sign.
SCOTT WAPNER: That would be quite a spike.
JEFFREY GUNDLACH: Well, that’s typically what happens when you get to the bottom, there’s so much nervousness and fear but the Vix is a little bit disturbing how it doesn’t go higher. Actually as the market pushes to the down side. But i think this is a bear market and i think we’ll go below the February lows almost with certainty.
SCOTT WAPNER: Is it a long lasting bear market or it can be short term as some have suggested on our air and then this secular bull market will resume?
JEFFREY GUNDLACH: I don’t think so. I think it’s a bear market. I think we’ve had the first leg down and the second leg down is usually more painful than the first leg down if this is indeed a bear market. Maybe in the short term we’re getting flushed out. I think it’s lasted a long time. It has a lot to do with the fact i believe we’re in a situation that maybe unprecedented was too strong but it is highly unusual that we are increasing the budget deficit so spectacularly so late in the cycle while the fed is hiking interest rates. I know you’ve teased the segment by talking about the suicide mission I’ve been talking about for months. The fed almost seems to be on a suicide mission. What i mean by that the deficit in the United States is extraordinarily high from where we are in the economic cycle and given what the debt level accumulated is already. In the first two months of fiscal ’19 it was just announced last week there’s a funny thing that happened in November where the payments for December ended up being pushed to November because December 1st was on a Saturday if you take that out it’s $44 billion that’s a big number. So if you wake that out and say that’s December and not November. Still, the first two months of fiscal ’19, the budget deficit is going up at an annualized rate of $1.62 trillion. And that’s the official budget deficit. The actual budget deficit is larger than what the report -- for example, for fiscal ’18, which ends September 30th, the deficit was around $800 billion. But the national debt went up by $1.3 trillion almost now. Why? What’s the difference there? There are items that are off budget. So the budget deficit really for fiscal ’18 was $1.3 nearly trillion that’s 6% of GDP and we’re supposedly having a good economy and we’re supposedly having jobs growth and all this other great stuff. In actuality we increase the deficit by 6% of GDP since government deficit change is a significant fraction – a significant variable in the GDP equation it seems to me there’s no real economic growth that’s happening away from the deficit. So what worries me is that as we move into a weaker economy, which will happen at some points and certainly the economy looks weaker now than it did entering 2018, that the deficit will continue to expand at a rate which could be prohibitive for the usual decline in interest rates helping to stimulate the economy. That’s what I think is the real big variable investors need to focus on. And while this is happening with the deficit exploding, the fed is raising interest rates which means the interest expense is going to be increasing year by year as these zero interest rates that we had for a number of years start to roll off and the bonds have to be refloated once they mature, the next five years we have something like $7 trillion of treasuries that are maturing the average coupon on those treasuries is almost as low as 2%, slightly higher, 2.1%. When they roll over, they’re going to be at a higher interest rate because the fed has been on the suicide mission of raising interest rates so the interest expense on that $7 trillion of treasuries is going to be -- maybe the rate will be at 3% like it is now or maybe 4% and you might even see we have an expense that goes up $100, $140 billion. So kind of the … of our government is coming back to haunt us ultimately. In financial markets, these things go on so much longer than they should Ross Perot ran for president running infomercials about we were doomed on the deficit and there was a book written in 1992, that same year, that was somewhat sponsored by the Peterson Foundation called bankruptcy 1994. And the idea behind the book was we have this compounding curve and this debt problem that is going to come back and really cause us problems. Well, he was early. He was early by at least 26 years. But he’s right, you can’t keep going on with the debt finance scheme, and I’m worried when the next recession comes we could be looking at, well heck, we’re supposedly in a good economy and the next two months we’re running $1.6 trillion what if we go into a recession what’s the deficit going to be $3 trillion? And does that mean interest rates don’t go down during the next recession, which is an idea I’ve been noodling around for a long time maybe they go higher with I’ve had a call the next two years that come 2021 the ten-year treasury will be at 6%. I get a lot of pushback a lot of debt deflation is out there in the twitter-sphere absolutely wrong the economy can’t handle higher interest rates. Interest rates might have a life of their own. It might not matter what the market can handle or can’t handle.
SCOTT WAPNER: they haven’t to this point. It’s been somewhat surprising that rates have remained where they are you said 3%. They hit 3%. 3.25%. Here we are below 2.9% today.
JEFFREY GUNDLACH: yes, on the ten year. I was focusing on the three year when it broke above 3.25% that was incredibly important frankly, I didn’t think we’d go back below 3.25 once we broke above because it seemed like such an important level. Here we are back below 3.25. But not impressively not in a way that would be consistent with a big decline in the global stock market. There’s a thing called the death cross. It’s a 50-day moving average goes below 200 a day particularly when they’re both declining. Presently about 80% of the countries in the MSCI World Index are in a death cross 80%. It’s amazing. And there was a chart that got a lot of play put out by deutsche bank about how many risk assets globally are in officially bear market down the arbitrary 20% number that, again, i don’t really ascribe to but so commonly used at that they used it and the highest in the data series going back to 1901. It’s like 90% of the risk assets around the world in dollar terms are in bear markets. So it’s a pretty widespread and coordinated set of weaknesses.
SCOTT WAPNER: Are you saying that by embarking on this suicide mission that the fed shouldn’t raise interest rates this week?
JEFFREY GUNDLACH: I don’t really think that’s the main thrust of my idea this week, yeah, they shouldn’t raise them this week.
SCOTT WAPNER: They shouldn’t?
JEFFREY GUNDLACH: No I don’t think they should. The bond market is saying, fed, you’ve got no way you should be raising interest rates look at the 2s, 3s, five-year part of the yield curve which are flat at 270 I guess that corroborative of a hike. But it is basically saying in the year 2019 you’re going to have a cut, this big, but a cut that was priced into the yield curve and in 2020 another cut. The problem, though, isn’t that the fed shouldn’t be raising rates. The problem is the fed shouldn’t have kept them so low for so long.
JEFFREY GUNDLACH: The problem we shouldn’t have had negative interest rates like we still have in Europe. We shouldn’t have done quantitative easing which is a circular financing scheme. The problem really is the deficit. The fed is kind of helpless here. The fact that the deficit is so out of control this late in the economic cycle, we have never before had the fed raise interest rates while the budget deficit was expanding it’s never happened. Because usually the budget deficit expands in response to a recession. It’s a way of stimulating to get us out of recession. Instead, we did it as a last gasp of keeping this economic recovery going by making it completely deficit based.
SCOTT WAPNER: So this morning, President Trump once again Tweeted about the Fed. Quote, “It’s incredible that with a very strong dollar and virtually no inflation, the outside world blowing up around us, Paris burning, China way down, that the Fed is even considering another interest rate hike. Take the victory,” he stayed. Stan Druckenmiller, today, Op-Ed “Wall Street Journal”: The Fed should quote “Pause its double-barreled blitz of higher rates and tighter liquidity.” So they’re right, you agree with them?
JEFFREY GUNDLACH: I do agree with them. I’ve been saying this pretty much all year, the double-barreled was actually -- he may have borrowed that from me, that’s how I’ve been talking about – it’s how I’ve been phrasing it all year – that we’ve really been tightening interest rates in a way that’s more than people understand. There’s a duo of economists at the Atlanta Fed called Wu and Xia, who did a study a few years back ‘What was the effect of quantitative easing?’ If they hadn’t done the quantitative easing and instead had taken the European model and gone to negative interest rates, how negative would those rates have had to be to have the same stimulative effect as the quantitative easing? And they concluded – and I don’t know if they’re right or not it’s very hypothetical – but their conclusion was that the quantitative easing amounted to 300 basis points of further cuts. So if they hadn’t done quantitative easing, to have the same stimulative effect, the Fed funds would have had been negative 300 basis points. Well let’s just say they’re right. Since they did about 2.5 trillion of quantitative easing and it was 300 basis points, 2.5 trillion divided by 3 is roughly $800 billion. Okay? So $800 billion is -- $800 billion divided by 4 means that’s what quantitative easing is one cut. So 100 basis points is $800 billion. So divided by 4. 25 basis points is $200 billion of quantitative easing. Well so far we’re pushing towards $400 billion -- we’re not there yet but we’re soon to be there -- of quantitative tightening. That means we’ve had would more rate hikes from quantitative tightening if Wu and Xia are right. So the Fed hasn’t just raised rates in that context eight times. They’ve raised them ten times. And the quantitative tightening is stated to be as high as $600 billion over fiscal ’19. So that’s another three rate hikes. So if they were going to follow their dots and raise rates so many times, there’s another three on top of that. So the amount of tightening has been underappreciated, I think, and Stan is right as he often is – he’s one of the greatest investors ever for, him and Chanos, the two titans of the hedge fund industry. They’re right that we are seeing the bond market react in a way that is historically very predictive of the Fed should not be doing this. And yet, we have this strange dynamic that they’ve almost promised a rate hike here in December. And then the President shows up with his Tweets trying to bully them into not doing it and it puts Jay Powell and the team in a very tough position. Because they’re damned if they do and damned if they don’t.
